The Mural Show - the 2011 People's Fair

The Mural Show
Access Gallery (909 Sante Fe Dr.)

June 15-July 10
3rd Friday Opening: June 17
People's Fair Appreciation Party: June 22
First Friday Sante Fe Art Walk: July 1

This year the Capitol Hill People’s Fair celebrates its 40th anniversary!  Each year during the fair teams of young artists from local youth organizations compete in a live art exhibit competition, called the Mural Project.  One and a half days, thousands of onlookers, 4 teams,  one theme, five months of planning, one interactive mural with thousands of participants, five 6ft x 8ft canvases, and lots of paint later, five incredible murals are created.

While many people see the murals at different stages of completion at the fair, few people get to see the end results.  Fortunately, this year the murals will be on display at Access Gallery for the month of July.

Urban Peak

Urban Peak is dedicated to helping homeless youth and youth at risk of becoming homeless overcome real life challenges by providing essential services and a supportive community, empowering them to become self-sufficient adults. Urban Peak has been participating in The Mural Project for several years now. The project is a great way for our youth to utilize  their creativity and work as a team to produce an inspiring work of art. The team collaborated and communicated their thoughts, feelings, and sketches  to come up with a central idea for the theme “Legacy”.

Colorado's Finest Alternative High School

Colorado's Finest Alternative High School in Englewood was begun in 1980.
They are now one of the top rated alternative programs in the state of Colorado.  Their students come from all over the Denver Metro area, from both public and private schools.  They enroll for a variety of reasons which may include social, cultural or academic concerns about their previous school experience. We require students to achieve at the 11th grade level or higher in reading, writing and math prior to graduation while providing them with a nurturing, small-school environment. We've been lucky enough to participate in the mural project for the past three years and are very excited to do it again!

Boys and Girls Club-Wilfley Branch

We have been helping young people in Denver make the most of their lives since 1961, when our first Club opened its doors to boys who needed a positive place to spend free time. Today, we serve both boys and girls in youth facilities located throughout the Denver Metro area.  On September 12, 1990, the Boys Club became Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver.  Over the years, the organization has grown to serve the needs of a rapidly growing community. Today, Boys & Girls Clubs of Metro Denver is focused on helping young people in the Denver Metro area make the most of their lives, while looking ahead to how best meet the needs of our community’s young people in the future.   The Boys and Girls Club- Wilfley Branch has been participating in the People's Fair Mural Project for the past 4 years.

VSA Colorado Access Gallery

VSA Colorado has been operating in the Santa Fe Arts District for nearly 6 years. During that time we have developed relationships with the schools, other nonprofit groups, artists and many kids from the surrounding neighborhood.  VSA Colorado/Access Gallery is an inclusive nonprofit organization that engages the community by opening doors to creative and educational opportunities for people with disabilities to access and experience the arts.  VSA Colorado/Access Gallery is creating an inclusive world where people with and without disabilities have the opportunity to be transformed by the arts.  VSA is an international nonprofit organization founded in 1974 by Ambassador Jean Kennedy Smith. Nearly five million people with disabilities participate in VSA arts programs each year through affiliate programs in each state and over sixty countries worldwide.  VSA Colorado was established in 1978 and has continues to thrive today. Each year VSA Colorado serves nearly ten thousand people with disabilities, their families and those that work with them
VSA Guiding Principles
Every young person with a disability deserves access to appropriate arts learning experiences.

All artists in schools and art educators should be appropriately prepared to include students with disabilities in their instruction.

All children, youth and adults with disabilities should have complete access to community cultural facilities and activities.

All individuals with disabilities who aspire to careers in the arts should have the opportunity to develop appropriate skills.
