CHUN 40th Anniversary Celebration Celebrate 40 Years of Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods!
Watch Video
In 1969, a group of young Capitol Hill residents took a hard look at what was happening to their neighborhoods in light of the urban flight and civic indifference, and decided something had to be done to stem further deterioration and disrespect of this historic but tarnished and neglected center city jewel. As community organizers they were a talented and experienced cadre. Many came from the ranks of the turbulent 60’s protest generation. Their initial grass-roots resistance was to stand in opposition to the city’s plan to add more invasive and divisive one-way streets through the Capitol Hill neighborhoods (specifically 11th and 12th avenues).
They won that battle, and from that community initiative formed Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods (CHUN), which today serves the community interests in matters of public safety, land use, zoning, liquor licenses, development, housing, transportation, historic preservation, education and the environment within Greater Capitol Hill. This consists of 54,000 residents, businesses and institutions within the CHUN boundaries (1st to 22nd Avenues, and from Broadway to Colorado Blvd). While CHUN is today Denver’s largest Registered Neighborhood Organization, its “united neighborhoods” charter also offers staff resources and support to its fellow twenty-four (24) Registered Neighborhood Organizations in the Greater Capitol Hill area.
One of CHUN’s most important decisions came in 1974, when it assumed responsibility of a small neighborhood arts, crafts and community services showcase, known as the Capitol Hill People’s Fair. The People’s Fair has become one of the country’s top-rated and best-attended community fairs, celebrating the vitality, excitement and fun of Greater Capitol Hill.
Throughout its 40-year history and mission of “Preserving the Past, Improving the Present and Planning for the future of Greater Capitol Hill”, CHUN has served as a vigilant sentinel to alert the Greater Capitol Hill community to pending public and private initiatives so that its constituent neighbors have a seat at the table and a say on the issues that affect our quality of life and environment. CHUN representatives have participated in myriad public and private processes in order to both protect and enhance the livability and sustainability of Greater Capitol Hill. Moreover, many of Denver’s political and business leaders and other private and public sector executives have come from the ranks of the CHUN membership and brought community sensitivities to the forefront in their new influential positions.
To celebrate and reflect on CHUN’s 40 year history, CHUN members past, present and future and the Greater Capitol Hill community at-large will gather at the Denver Botanic Gardens on Thursday, October 1, 2009 at 5:30pm for an evening of good food, drink, entertainment and community celebration. CHUN co-founder and former Colorado Congresswoman Pat Schroeder will attend as will our elected officials, along with many Greater Capitol Hill friends near and far who are expected to fill Mitchell Hall’s 250 capacity seating. Hazel Miller will be there to entertain as will former state legislator-turned-piano man Jerry Kopel.
The gala event also will be a fundraiser to support CHUN’s community services, including the on-going restoration of CHUN’s historic Tears-MacFarlane House at 1290 Williams Street on Cheesman Park.
