CHUN History Matters MomentExploring Our Neighborhood: The Sherman Historic DistrictEver strolled down Poet’s Row and wondered what gives this charming block its name? Nestled in the Capitol Hill neighborhood, the Sherman Historic District earned its spot on the National Register of Historic Places in 2004—and for good reason! This stretch of three-story brick apartments on the 1000 block of Sherman (between 10th and 11th Avenues) is a stunning showcase of Art Deco, Art Moderne, and International styles, complete with terra cotta door surrounds and trim. But what really makes it special? The buildings are all named after literary greats—hence the nickname Poet’s Row! While the exact origin of the name remains a mystery, it’s likely a nod to the district’s main architect, Charles Strong, a known literature lover. And as if the literary flair wasn’t enough, residents also get a prime view of the Colorado State Capitol, just two blocks north. Next time you’re wandering Capitol Hill, take a moment to appreciate this historic gem—it’s a true chapter in Denver’s story!
