Denver Municipal Band Plays in Cheesman ParkThanks to all our friends and neighbors who joined CHUN and the Denver Municipal Band for a fee concert in the park in July. The Denver Municipal Band is unique in that they play as a 40-piece Concert Band, a 20-piece Jazz Band, and contract to a show band, a brass quintet or smaller ensembles. Because of their flexibility, they play everything — orchestral, rock, soul, and funk. Watch this space for announcements about future free concerts in the park. August 6: CHUN History Matters Committee Hosts Landmarks Chat
CHUN History Matters MomentThe Alladin Theatre: One of Denver’s Lost PlacesThe corner of Colfax and Race used to house one of the region’s most recognizable and unique movie theatres, called the Alladin. Opened in 1926, this palatial theatre could seat 911 people and was a great place for Denverites to gather for films, plays and concerts. It was built by Harry E. Huffman, who was known in Denver as 'Mr. Movies' in the 1920s and 30s. The Denver Post reported that the Alladin was 'an entrancing dream, a living vision'. Some people called it the Taj Mahal of East Colfax. The Alladin was built before the Wyman Historic District was established and was torn down in August 1984, despite a major push by Capitol Hill United Neighborhood’s and others to save the theatre. The effort to landmark the boarded-up property was unsuccessful and the site is now a Walgreen’s store. Though the Alladin began life in the silent film era, the theater was quick to move to “talkies.” It was the place for screening early movies that used synchronized music, dialogue, and sound effects, like “Don Juan” and “The Jazz Singer.” Behind the movie screen was a full stage that was also used over the decades for live theater performances, including the Pirates of Penzance. This is one of Denver’s lost places. There’s no trace of the Aladdin left at 2000 East Colfax Avenue today, except for the namesake Alladin Liquors, located a block east of where the theatre once proudly stood.
