A Message from our Executive Director CHUN Community Member of the MonthAlthea Center Althea Center for Engaged Spirituality is 100! Althea Center for Engaged Spirituality is proud to celebrate 100 years of believing in the human capacity for enlightenment, and our primary intention is to elevate the spiritual awareness of our entire human community for freedom of all beings and the betterment of the world. The Althea Center leads, hosts, and facilitates inspiring experiences, engaging programs, and public events that foster diversity, integrity, and an inclusive approach to spiritual practice and mystical awakening. More recent Althea programs and community involvements have included the Women’s Homelessness Initiative and Mariposa, its LGBTQ+ program. In addition to the many classes and other offerings for its members and the public, the Althea Center is currently home to three non-profits: St. Francis Center, Sisters of Color United for Education, and Spirit of the Sun. These non-profits each address needs in our community such as homelessness, food insecurity, indigenous/native youth and elders, and community health and education. The Althea Center for Engaged Spirituality does not discriminate when offering sacred space and freely open our doors to identities usually cast out of many mainstream religious places, such as community-based group meetings (gender, sexual orientation, generational, etc.), Alcoholics Anonymous, occult/moon rituals, yoga, therapists for LGBTQ+ individuals, midwifery/doula training, etc. Welcome to Our New CHUN MembersAndrea Wilkins Edward Jones Investments Luna Lending, Inc Jasmine Baker Conoshia Odum Keith and Annie Moore Abigail Johnson David Stroer CHUN News, Events and UpdatesCHUN celebrated 55 Years in Greater Capitol Hill and YOU MAKE IT A SUCCESS!Thank you for being part of CHUN’s Home for the Holidays Neighborhood Party! See you THERE!CHUN History Matters MomentExploring Our Neighborhood: Cheesman Park Nestled in the heart of the Capitol Hill neighborhood, Cheesman Park is a cherished urban oasis brimming with history and timeless beauty. Spanning 80.7 acres, the park is bordered by Humboldt Street to the west, Race Street and the Denver Botanic Gardens to the east, 13th Avenue to the north, and 8th Avenue to the south. The park’s story began in 1898, when Denver’s renowned landscape architect, Reinhard Schuetze, crafted the original design. His vision included a figure-eight roadway, a pavilion, a reflecting pool, and tree-lined borders. After Schuetze’s passing in 1910, his successor, S.R. DeBoer, completed the park, remaining true to the original plan. By 1910, Cheesman Park had become a stunning sanctuary, showcasing its iconic neoclassical pavilion and featuring a tranquil Japanese garden. Today, it continues to offer open green spaces and a welcoming retreat for relaxation and recreation. While exploring, make sure to stop by the Secret Garden Café, located near the park. Treat yourself to a refreshing drink, a light snack, or a sweet indulgence as you soak in the serene surroundings. Whether it’s a leisurely stroll or a peaceful moment with a treat in hand, Cheesman Park is the perfect blend of nature, history, and community. Thank you for your Dedication!Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods (CHUN) extends its heartfelt gratitude to Peggy Randall, who has decided to step away from the CHUN Board of Directors after years of dedicated service. Peggy has been an invaluable advocate for History Matters, championing CHUN’s commitment to preservation, community events, and celebrating Capitol Hill’s rich history. Peggy’s leadership and dedication have been instrumental in promoting awareness of our neighborhood’s historic significance. Through her efforts, CHUN has deepened its mission to honor the past while fostering a sense of community and connection for all who call Capitol Hill home. From organizing historical walking tours to ensuring preservation remains a central pillar of CHUN’s work, Peggy’s contributions will leave a lasting legacy. As we look to the future, CHUN remains steadfast in its commitment to history, preservation, and community engagement—values Peggy has so passionately upheld.
