CHUN History Matters Moment

Colorado’s beautiful and historic state capitol- Part II

Picture
The Colorado State Capitol Building sits on a perch in the Denver neighborhood now known as Capitol Hill. But it was not always certain that it would even be in Denver! If you missed last month’s History Matters Moment, click here to learn more.
Intentionally designed as a smaller version of the United States Capitol, the Colorado State Capitol features grand columns and classical proportions at its prominent corner at 200 East Colfax.  Here are some fun facts about the Colorado State Capitol building:
  • After years of construction, the Capitol Building opened in 1894 as home to the Colorado General Assembly, and the offices of the Governor, Lieutenant Governor, and Treasurer.
  • The beautiful white granite exterior comes from Colorado and the building is topped with a distinctive gold dome to commemorate the Colorado Gold Rush and resulting mining industry.  The dome itself is made of copper panels that are gilded with gold leaf from a Colorado mine, added to the building in 1908.
  • The "Mile High" step. The 13th step of the west entrance is exactly one mile (5,280 feet) above sea level, though it's worth noting that there have been a few revisions to this marker due to more accurate measurements over time.
  • The inside of the building is adorned with what is believed to be the entire known supply of Colorado Rose Onyx, a rare rose marble from a quarry near Beulah, Colorado. White Yule Marble from the quarries near Marble, Colorado, was also used throughout the building for the floors.
  • The Capitol is home to a collection of murals by Allen Tupper True, depicting Colorado's history, including scenes from Native American life and the early days of European settlement.
  • The rotunda features portraits of every U.S. president, updated with each new administration. This tradition adds to the building's historical significance.
  • The Senate and House of Representatives chambers are adorned with beautiful stained glass windows depicting Colorado's history.
Public Tours: The Colorado State Capitol offers free public tours, allowing visitors to explore the building's rich history and stunning architecture. The tours include a climb up to the dome, where you can enjoy panoramic views of Denver and the Rocky Mountains. To learn more about seasonal schedules, go to https://capitol.colorado.gov/.

Sidewalk Fees are Coming!

Picture
The Denver City Council unanimously approved final changes to the sidewalk fee structure last week. Previously, residents were responsible for their sidewalk upkeep, which led to many sidewalks in disrepair and portions of the city with no sidewalks. The fee for sidewalks in Denver is anticipated to begin in January 2025. Click below to read more about these updates.
