Colorado State Representative Steven Woodrow Discusses Land Use Bills with CHUN members and neighbors[March 2024] The Urban Planning meeting received a presentation from Rep. Woodrow for the second year in a row about housing bills during the legislative session.
Rep. Woodrow’s presentation concerned the Transit Oriented Communities bill that he sponsors, along with Senator Chris Hansen, who also represents portions of CHUN’s neighborhoods. The bill has the support of Governor Jared Polis. The goals of the bill are to remove burdensome barriers to encourage more affordable homes near transit; to empower local governments to build more housing; to reward cities and counties that allow more housing with financial assistance; and to help residents stay in their communities. January Urban Planning Committee Focuses on Colfax Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Project Updates[January 2024] The Urban Planning Committee hosted a meeting focused on the Colfax Bus Rapid Transit (commonly known as BRT) project that will have shovels in the ground later this year. Councilwoman Amanda Sawyer presented the design overlay around the bus stops that recently moved through council. This overlay discourages motor vehicle uses, such as drive throughs, while encouraging a pedestrian friendly experience.
We heard from Frank Locantore, of the Colfax Business Improvement District, who discussed his efforts to diminish the small business interruption effects of the construction of the BRT, and other efforts to make Colfax, in his words, “less fancy, more fun.” We also heard from Susan Powers of Urban Ventures, who is at work on behalf of The Colorado Health Foundation to design and build a major affordable housing campus in Uptown that will offer many amenities, infrastructure for children, and supportive services. The transformation will elevate Denver's first national historic landmark, the Denver Civic Center, for the next 100 years with new daily energy, world class performance and events. The plan includes creating a true amphitheater and reimaging Bannock Street and the Central Promenade to event and gathering spaces. |
