Urban Dweller

Volume 37, Edition 3

3/4/2019

Message From the President

Greetings Neighbors and Friends,

As I sit and write this message, it is 5 degrees outside. During cold days like these, I am grateful for the many blessings I have in my life--family, dear friends, employment opportunities, and a warm place to call home.  Many in our community struggle with homelessness and do not have people (or places) to turn to on extremely cold days and throughout the year.  Consider supporting an organization dedicated to helping those in need.  The following have been close partners of Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods (CHUN) and are doing some important work to tackle this and other vexing issues within our boundaries: Warren Village, CHARG Resource Center, The Gathering Place, Capitol Hill United Ministries, Project Safehouse, the GLBT Center of Colorado, Colorado Coalition for the Homeless, Urban Peak, and many others.

As March enters like a lion, here a few updates from CHUN:

  • CHUN Hosts Town Hall with Legislators: On Thursday, February 28th, more than 70 neighborhood residents, members, community advocates, and friends of CHUN hosted a town hall with State Representatives Hansen, Garnett, and Herod. Also in attendance was State Senators Lois Court and Robert Rodriguez.  Each represent portions of CHUN's geographic boundaries. The forum consisted of myriad issues including multi-modal transit, funding public education, addressing affordable housing, recycling programs, and other issues important to the Mile High City and our neighborhoods. If you would like to contact your legislator, you can do so HERE.
  • City Council Candidate Forum: On April 2, 2019, CHUN, along with other registered neighborhood organizations and Denver Decides, will host a City Council candidate forum for those vying for the District 10 seat. More details to come.
  • People's Fair Update and Focus on 50th Anniversary:  As many of you probably saw in the Denver Post and on Facebook, the Capitol Hill People's Fair is on hiatus this year.  Instead, CHUN will focus on celebrating our 50th Anniversary of championing Denver's neighborhoods and the greater Capitol Hill Community, If you would like to get involved in planning and supporting the 50th Anniversary event, please contact Sarah Wells and Molly Williams at [email protected].
  • Recurring donations fuel our work:  In recent weeks, a few of you asked how/where to donate to CHUN with a recurring donation--above and beyond the annual member dues.  The ColoradoGives platform is an ideal approach for this.  Any support is meaningful--even if it is $5, $10, $25, or more per month. Your support is integral to our community engagement and outreach efforts. If you would like to sign up and support our work with a one-time and/or recurring gift, you can do so by visiting HERE.
  • A friendly reminder to political candidates for municipal, state, or federal office.   As Denver's municipal elections kick into high gear, it's important to remember that as a 501(c)(3), CHUN and its board members are prohibited from supporting or endorsing political candidates in the name of CHUN or using their official CHUN capacity.  If you see the name of a board member as a candidate and/or endorser of a campaign, please know that these opinions and perspectives do not represent those of the organization.  From time to time, you may see CHUN engage ballot measure discussions.  The board of delegates evaluate these on a case-by-case basis and may endorse and/or oppose such measures as they arise.

Wishing you the very best this March.  Stay warm.

Travis Leiker
President, Board of Delegates

Share Your Opinions about the Future of Your Neighborhood

What kind of a future do you want for your neighborhood? That’s the question that the city’s Department of Community Planning and Development (CPD) is asking as the City formulates a new neighborhood plan for six East Central neighborhoods: Capitol Hill, Uptown, Cheesman Park, City Park West, Congress Park and South City Park. Representatives from these disparate neighborhoods have been meeting since July 2017 to determine priorities and a direction for theses neighborhoods, loosely knit together by Colfax Ave., which is their shared backbone. Now the plan is beginning to take a more defined shape and CPD held a series of neighborhood workshops in mid-February to
solicit input.

If you didn’t have a chance to make it to one of the meetings, you still have a chance to weigh in. You can check out both the overarching plan that covers all six neighborhoods in the East Central Area Plan or you can look at the individual neighborhoods. We recommend both. Just indicate what you like and what you don’t like.
