July 2023

7/10/2023

News from Christopher

Happy belated Fourth of July Denver!

The first half of 2023 has been a time of transition for Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods (CHUN). And the second half of 2023 will bring some equally exciting changes and opportunities to CHUN and to our neighborhoods!

January brought the election of a new leadership team for the CHUN Board of Directors. We continued our drumbeat of actions, meetings and activities. CHUN distributed thousands of dollars in S.E.E.D. awards to eight well-deserving local non-profit organizations to help them continue their great work in our community.  CHUN issued its first ever issues questionnaire for the numerous candidates for Denver Mayor and City Council to encourage them to consider the needs and interests of Registered Neighborhood Organizations (RNO) like CHUN and the residents we serve.

CHUN's History Matters Committee worked with numerous other Denver non-profit organizations to convince the Landmark Commission and then the Denver City Council to approve an historic designation for the beautiful house at 1741 Gaylord Street.  And our Urban Planning Committee rallied support for the Empowerment Programs major expansion of its affordable housing facility at 1777 North Franklin Street.  The Engagement Committee organized two large neighborhood clean up efforts, one of which involved dozens of your neighbors to collect over one ton of litter from our streets.

This month, CHUN will bring on board a new Executive Director to help support and energize CHUN's efforts on behalf of the residents of our nine neighborhoods.  We are looking forward to a full slate of meetings, events and activities by our committees designed to inform and engage our members.

In the second half of this year, construction commenced at the Café at the Tears-McFarlane House.  The Café, which is situated right on the north border of Cheesman Park, will provide a wonderful meeting place and refreshment spot for the hundreds of Denverites who regularly walk, jog, picnic and enjoy the beauty of this green jewel in the heart of Denver.

If you are interested in becoming a part of CHUN's efforts to improve our neighborhoods and to help move Denver forward on an inclusive and positive path, click here to learn more about joining CHUN.

Thank you.
Christopher Mansour, President
CHUN Board of Directors

Denver Outdoor Places Program presents to Urban Planning Committee

James (Jay) Decker, City Planner Principal at DOTI, presented to CHUN's Urban Planning Committee in June regarding the Denver Outdoor Places Pilot Program. CHUN is interested in the the potential application for this program regarding 7th Avenue between Grant and Sherman and other applications in the CHUN boundaries.

Denver’s Outdoor Places Program builds on the success of the temporary outdoor dining program used by local businesses during the pandemic. While the temporary program was created in May 2020 to help restaurants and bars safely expand their serving capacity during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic, the permanent program currently in development will allow these and other businesses to use private and public space for outdoor operations after the temporary program ends.

There are four different patio types that will each receive their own program requirements:
  • Above Curb Patios (public sidewalk area, tree lawns)
  • Private Property Patios (private parking lots, privately-owned areas)
  • Below Curb Patios (on-street parking)
  • Full Street Closure Pilot (travel lanes)
Temporary patio permits in good standing as of October 31, 2022 (meaning renewals were on time and the patios met the requirements of the permit) are allowed to remain into 2023 while the permanent Outdoor Places Program is developed.
