Letter from Christopher

​My wife and I recently traveled through Greece and Italy, and many times, I was awed that we were walking on cobblestone streets where people have walked for hundreds, if not thousands of years, and walking past stunning houses and buildings where people have lived and worked for hundreds, if not thousands of years.

It is interesting, in comparison, how sometimes here we find it difficult or controversial to preserve a small number of our relatively historic houses and buildings, which may only be a hundred or so years young. Preserving our historic buildings provides our city with much needed color, diversity, and character that makes Denver a unique and interesting place in which to live and raise families.

Of course we need more housing for the thousands of people flocking to Denver. And that means new houses, new buildings, new streets and improved infrastructure, but, if we are smart about it, we can preserve that which makes Denver special, while building the new in a way that makes Denver amazing.

That is why CHUN joined other concerned community groups and individuals to support historic landmark designation for the beautiful house at 1741 Gaylord Street. We are pleased that the Denver City Council agreed with us and, in a rare move, voted unanimously to approve the landmark designation. And it’s why we hosted the recent clean up in Cheeseman Park, which encouraged a dedicated group of Denverites to help beautify this city treasure. In addition, CHUN supported VIVA Streets to close Broadway and enabled our neighbors to come together to celebrate our city.

So, join your neighbors and friends at Capitol Hill United Neighborhoods as we strive to preserve the past, improve the present, and plan for the future. You can make a difference for our young city!

Colorado Coalition for the Homeless

The Mission of the Colorado Coalition for the Homeless is to work collaboratively toward the prevention of homelessness and the creation of lasting solutions for families, children, and individuals who are experiencing or at-risk of homelessness throughout Colorado.

​The Coalition believes safe, adequate housing and quality health care is a human right.

The Coalition offers many services to help individuals and families, whether they’re in need of housing, health care, substance use treatment, help with a job, or childcare. 

More than 20,000 people and 2,000 families receive services from The Coalition every year.

CHUN leads Cheesman Park Clean Up with Denver Park Trust

THANK YOU to everyone who participated in the Parks, Rivers, Trails & Trees Park Clean Up!  

​Held on May 13, 2023, the second annual Park Clean Up is a city-wide volunteer park stewardship day and community celebration.

​With 13 parks and more than 300 volunteers, this year's event was a smashing success.

Special thanks to those who participated in the Cheesman Park Clean Up lead by CHUN.

June 3: CHUN and Colorado Rapids Community Night ​

CHUN has partnered with the Rapids for a community night and to bring you discounted tickets! Tickets are available for friends and family. Get them soon and remember to stay for the after-game fireworks.

June 8: SafeHouse Denver Annual Food Tasting Event ​

​SafeHouse Denver is hosting Sampling For Hope, its signature annual food tasting event. 

​Tickets are available now and will allow guests to try appetizers, entrees and desserts from 13 local restaurant partners.

The evening will also feature a survivor speaker bravely sharing the story of her personal journey toward hope, healing and empowerment.
 
All funds raised by this event directly benefit SafeHouse Denver’s Extended Stay Program (ESP).

June 10 and 11 : Denver Chalk Art Festival ​

The annual Denver Chalk Art Festival captivates 150,000+ visitors who come to watch the asphalt in the Golden
Triangle neighborhood transform into a bright and colorful street museum.
​
This year’s festival will spotlight more than 150 unique professional, amateur and student artists, each spending up to three days on their hands and knees transforming pavement canvas into masterpieces. These street paintings range from original artwork to reproductions of classics.

Denver Signs Historic Agreement on Waterway Restoration

In May, government representatives gathered to celebrate and sign a historic intergovernmental agreement that will result in a multi-million-dollar investment in flood risk management, ecosystem restoration and recreation on Denver area waterways.

The Waterway Resiliency Program  will restore a 6.5-mile stretch of the South Platte River from 6th Avenue to 58th Avenue in Denver and Adam Counties, creating more inviting spaces for plants, animals and people, and reducing flood risks along Weir and Harvard Gulches

Denver Installing Multimodal Travel Improvements on Blake and Market Streets Downtown

As the weather warms up and more people are out and about on foot, on bike and on scooters, Denver’s Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI) is making changes on two downtown streets to make travel safer for all.
 
New protected bike lanes on Blake and Market that will span 2 miles from the Cherry Creek Trail to Broadway will provide dedicated space on the street for people to bike and scooter, reducing concerns about scooter riding on sidewalks and improving the environment for people walking. ​
