Urban Dweller

Volume 40, Edition 11

11/2/2022

Message from CHUN Leadership

Welcome to the November edition of Urban Dweller. The greater Capitol Hill neighborhoods have been full of colorful splendor this month, first with leaves and then with pumpkins and Halloween costumes. It was great to see so many people enjoying Halloween, be it kids and their parents trick-or-treating, or those of us a little more advanced in our years connecting with friends and family at parties. The array of costumers stepping into Ubers or walking and scootering along our streets has been wonderful and I certainly have some inspiration for next year.

Ballots have arrived for Denver’s General Election and votes must be received by 7 p.m. on November 8th. CHUN has endorsed four ballot initiatives that we believe support an equitable and sustainable future for our city. We urge a ‘yes’ vote on Strong Library Strong Denver, No Eviction Without Representation, Waste No More, and Denver Deserves Sidewalks.

CHUN recognizes its role in standing with our public institutions, supporting important safety net programs, and a civic duty to fight bad public policy. The CHUN board voted to oppose Proposition 121, which would reduce state income tax to detrimental levels impacting a range of services and programs. This is one of the few occasions when the CHUN board has weighed in on statewide ballot measures.

I would also like to draw your attention to one of CHUN’s signature initiatives, the SEED Awards. Each year, CHUN distributes funds to community focused initiatives that support Smart development, Enrichment and learning, Environmental sustainability, and Diversity to neighborhood in the greater Capitol Hill neighborhoods. Please apply on our web site.

The great thing about this time of year is the quantity of activities and events to participate in. In this edition, you’ll read about opportunities ranging from a 5k/10k Pumpkin Race to the Denver Christkindlmarket. November 5th will be the Veterans Day parade day in Denver, when we will commemorate and celebrate all those, near and far, who have served in the armed forces. The parade and festivities will be at Civic Center Park.

Finally, we are excited to have moved back into the Tears-McFarlane House. Wonderfully renovated in partnership with City Streets Investors, the original mansion is now buzzing with activity once again and we cannot wait for work to commence in 2023 on the new café adjacent to Cheesman Park. CHUN will have a presence in the house from 10 a.m. - 3 p.m. on Mondays and Wednesdays, so stop by and say hi! We may be away from the house at meetings, so please call us first at (720) 634-6378.

I hope you have enjoyed the lovely fall and have your puffer jackets ready to go as we move into winter. We look forward to seeing you soon!

Cheers,
John
